Double Indemnity & LA Confidential - Screenshot Comparison

This is the shot from Double Indemnity where Phyllis Dietrichson is first introduced. It is a medium low angle shot from Walter Neff's point of view. In the foreground is a staircase railing, and in the middle-ground a scantily clad Phyllis. She is only wearing a towel, and tells Walter she has been sunbathing. Even though the film is in black and white, it's apparent that she has blonde, expensively styled hair and nice makeup.

In this shot from LA Confidential, we meet the film's femme fatale, Lynn Bracken. The shot is a medium close-up from Bud White's point of view. Lynn is shown wearing a black hooded coat with white trim. Like Phyllis, she has styled blonde hair and is wearing makeup. However, in stark contrast to the Phyllis' presentation, Lynn is fully clothed in this scene. This suggests the respect her character is going to demand in the movie. Although it's later revealed that she works as a high class prostitute, the style of her introduction suggests otherwise. It is hard to conclude Lynn's profession based on her appearance and interaction with Bud. In fact, Lynn (the prostitute) appears modest while Phyllis (the housewife) appears to be the opposite. While Phyllis tries to manipulate others through her sexuality to get what she wants, Lynn tries to be a kind person and expects to receive respect and equality in exchange for it. All of this can be concluded just from the differing styles of Phyllis and Lynn's introductions.

Minority Report Screenshot

In this shot, Anderton is standing up holding Agatha while they talk to the hacker. The shot is a long shot, as we can see most of each person. Anderton and Agatha are standing up to the right of the shot, and the hacker is crouching down mid-motion about five feet to the left. Agatha's back is to us, and we can see Anderton's profile - they turned towards the hacker, listening to him speak. The three characters make up the shot's foreground, and behind them is a piece of machinery making up the middle-ground. The lighting in this shot seems to be coming from above, as the characters' heads and shoulders are illuminated in white light. Besides this white light, the colors of this shot are mainly blue and green. The walls of the room (which make up the background) are a light green, contrasted to the darker blue of a piece of machinery in the middle of the shot. The one contrast to the blue/green tones of the shot is the hacker's reddish brown leather jacket.

Movies!

Some favorite movies I can remember at the moment are Stranger than Fiction, Amadeus and the Royal Tenenbaums, Scarface, and Wedding Crashers. Also, last May I saw a great Irish movie starring Colin Farrell called Ondine. At one point I was pretty into foreign films, ones that come to mind are Amelie and Danish movie called Festen. Besides that, I like the complete works of Johnny Depp, Will Ferrell, and Colin Farrell.
